Is it just me, or is there something about ‘growing up’ that makes socializing increasingly structured and/or formal? I feel like certain people, these days in adult land, require a destination or occasion or objective or plan as a pretext to social interaction. It’d be nice if everyone stopped using their cellphones and computers for a day, so then you’d just have to show...

After the first glass of vodka you can accept just about anything of life even your own mysteriousness you think it is nice that a box of matches is purple and brown and is called La Petite and comes from Sweden for they are words that you know and that is all you know words not their feelings or what they mean and you write because you know them not...

I will be leaving for Spain. Ahhh! Excitement and anxiety.
For those Tumblr’ers who wish to keep up with my sporadic ramblings, I have to keep a blog for my fellowship: so please check it out! And send me comments if you see fit (or suggestions for the layout, since it is obviously still a work in progress).

The Zulu word for ‘cow’ is also the zulu word for ‘vagina.’ When I asked a zulu guy why, he said ‘they’re both really valuable.’

X. J. Kennedy observed in the Atlantic Monthly. “[James] Merrill never sprawls, never flails about, never strikes postures. Intuitively he knows that, as Yeats once pointed out, in poetry, ‘all that is personal soon rots; it must be packed in ice or salt.’”
He’s himself in these moments, not pieces of the women he’s slept with. He enters their lives as you enter a dream, without volition, and he lives there as you live in a dream, however long it lasts. And in the morning, you remember nothing of the dream at all, nothing at all.

"Paula Deen Is Trying to Kill Us 2"
“Remember when Paula Deen tried to kill us with deep-fried butter?
She’s back, this time with a recipe for fried mac and cheese. And not just any garden variety mac-and-cheese recipe. Nope. This one calls for a pound of bacon and five eggs total.
Wait—only 4 tablespoons butter? Is that a typo?” <src>

I have to create a publicity blog for my fellowship, and I’m thinking Tumblr might not work the best. What about Wordpress or Blogger? Thoughts?
When he worked he felt a scratch at his calf, a scarlet wound, a whoop of blood. He was hungry; even his eyes were hungry. All he saw was red: red snow, red legs of women in the village rues, red pinwheels of hay. “It is a wonderful thing to hurt a human being, something that lives. It is confoundedly difficult, but after all it is splendid.” Beyond the window, a cave opened in the...

My current life exactly
You guys rock. Let’s all move to NY and create a commune of unemployed misfits. I’ll play the part of the poet, Erin can be the chemist, and Daphne will be the hot one. How’s that sound?

I love this woman.
Louise Glück (on one of my poems): “I think you have to leave the bedroom in order to find the answer.”
Me (laughing): “That sounds like something my therapist might say.”

Was thinking about my uncertain future again, and looked up this little gem from Richard Brodhead that he e-mailed me back in the fall:
All you can do is keep as many options active as you feel truly attracted to, see what choices you have, make one, then trust to time and your own inner efforts to shape the whole life you want. “Oh, Time, Strength, Cash, and Patience!” as they say...

One of the reasons Hillary [CNN] should have been president. Am I allowed to say that? Obama has pretty much choked in this regard:
“And yet the changes aren’t coming as fast as many gay Americans would like, and as our Bill of Rights would demand. Especially in Washington. Despite Barack Obama’s pledges as a candidate and president, there is no discernible movement on repealing the...
